Spring & Bees

‘Spring and Bees’ – Don’t you immediately think it is going to be a romantic story?

Well actually, no it’s not! But it is a beautiful tale in it’s own way.

During the last couple of days I spent some time with my parents at my Granny’s place. Actually she is not living any more in that small farmstead, but it is the place my dad has his greenhouse and he is taking care so that it is nice around.

I love the organic harvest from that place, but not so much taking part in planting or harvesting to be honest! Somehow in these last days though, it was nice to help repair the greenhouse, to tidy up around and to discover some evidence of spring under the old grey grass. Spring is a really amazing time in Lithuania and the countries around.

There are still clear four seasons in the year here by the Baltic sea. Ohh well, global warming has affected things a lot, but still there is spring – when nature awakes, everything start to grow, the trees become green, the flowers start to find their way up from the deep soil, the birds come back from the South, the sun stays longer and heats us from outside and inside, bees are around and people fall in love.

After spring comes summer – full of life, heat, many colors, the time for camping, swimming, having holidays, and watching the sky – especially August!

Then autumn arrives and that can be amazing too. The tree leaves turn from their green colours to become gold and colorful, people in the gardens harvest their goods, days become shorter, rains come and we start to spend more time next to the fire with a cup of coffee and a good book as the nature prepares to sleep.

And after comes the white winter  (nowadays it seems winter comes and leaves a couple time), kids are waiting for the thermometer to read -20 degrees Celsius so they don’t need to go to school and can run outside to make snowmen or tunnels, have snowball fights, make snow angels.

But for now spring is here and we will try to get as much as we can from it! I believe that soon our lettuces, dill, radishes and rucola will start to grow in the green house! Our little cucumbers will be able to go to the green house too! Pretty soon tomatoes, basil, eggplants, chilies and peppers will join them as well!

I am not really a fan of flowers, but I even dug some up from the field so we can have them at home. Maybe we will join my parents for some more outside activities in the garden or greenhouse to get some fresh air, some new ideas and just to have some exercise and fun nearby to the busy bees who are just coming out of their hives and, just like us, getting their energy back!
